Growth of Pediatric Surgery

In July of 2024, Dr. Alliance Niyukuri started work at Kibuye Hope Hospital, sent by Christian Health Service Corps. Dr. Alliance and his family have a long history at Kibuye, working first as a generalist after graduating from HAU, then as a General Surgeon after finishing PAACS residency. Most recently, he completed a Pediatric Surgery fellowship in Malawi, making him one of two pediatric surgeons in Burundi.

With his arrival at Kibuye, the surgery department has started a specific Pediatric Surgery service to care for the many children who receive surgery at Kibuye. For many years, Kibuye has been providing free surgery to children with cleft lip and palate through partnership with Smile Train, and with Dr. Alliance’s arrival, this volume is increasing. A campaign in September resulted in 17 children receiving surgery, and a campaign this week should have a similar number.

This month, Kibuye offered clinical training to 24 medical students, 14 nursing interns, as well as nursing and paramedical students. The ENT course was taught by a professor from Buja, and now Dr. Logan is teaching the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation course.8 post-graduate intern doctors graduates, and 4 new doctors have been accepted to the program. 2 new surgical residents joined to make 7 total, in addition to a visiting surgical resident from Kenya and another from Cameroon.
